Herman Reijers

Herman (Hermannus) Reijers (Amsterdam, 1935-2001) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts (the later Gerrit Rietveld Academie) in Amsterdam, 1952-1954. As living off one’s art was difficult and complicated in post-war Amsterdam, Reijers decided to go to Sweden, a country he had heard good things about. In 1954 he landed in Varmland, where his friend and fellow painter Pieter de Groot Boersma lived. In his turn, it was Reijers who welcomed Hans Jansen when he arrived in Karlstad in 1961. The artist Reijers made sculptures, drawings, prints and paintings; moreover, he left his mark on Varlmlands culture, figuratively as well as literally. Karkstad boasts a number of his sculptures, among which Sola i Karlstad in front of Stadshotellet.
